Recognized As Outstanding Educator by The University of Chicago

Today I received a tremendous honor from the University of Chicago by being recognized as an “outstanding educator” by their academic institution. This honor has been made even more meaningful because it was initiated by a former student of mine who graduated this past year and is now entering his freshman year at the University of Chicago. The school has a program whereby it asks its entering students to help “identify and commend outstanding high school educators”, which it has been doing for the past thirty years.

Ricard Candidate for Teacher of the Year

After being rewarded for teacher of the month earlier in the year, and due to his year long efforts, John Ricard is among the candidates for teacher of the year for Somerset Academy.

Ricard is being recognized for launching the Latin program and his contributions in his other subjects. He has even been able to build his own website to accompany his courses.

John Ricard Awarded Runner Up for Teacher of the Year

Well, I didn’t win first place – but I got 2nd! The votes came in on Friday the 8th for Teacher Appreciation Week at our school and I placed a close 2nd for the top spot.

It is my 2nd year at the school – and it will be my last, sadly (see DCS Eliminating Latin Program) – but considering I also teach Latin this is an accomplishment I am proud of.

My goal is not only for my students to learn ancient Latin, how to read it, speak it, and dissect its grammar as well as its history, but also to do it in a fun yet relevant way. This just affirms that my hard work is not going unnoticed.

Ironic that the school is losing its 2nd favorite teacher.
